Welcome to DougTrails

On May 31st, 2006, my life changed dramatically. Before being hit by a pickup truck while riding my bicycle in West Philadelphia, I had plans to become a materials engineer. I stopped at nothing and was only headed upward in life. Then, in a hit-and-run that left me unconscious in the bike lane of Lancaster Avenue in Philadelphia, I was forced to view life at a MUCH slower pace. Little did I know, but cycling wasn’t just the cause for my trauma; it would become the impetus for my recovery from traumatic brain injury. Following a 2 week coma, a month and a half of inpatient hospital care and months of outpatient rehabilitation, I was only barely ready to return to everyday life. But,  I’d have gotten nowhere if it weren’t for the help of family, friends, doctors, and rehabilitation specialists all helping motivate me towards a complete recovery. My motivation and drive to return to the road acted as a reason to keep fighting- I hope to instill this same drive and impetus in others who are in the same dilemma.

Beginning June 27 2011, I will embark on a cycling journey across the United States. During this cross-country tour, I will share my story of the continuous challenges that interplay with traumatic brain injury with media, hospitals, and those recovering from this horrible injury. Through my story, I hope to inspire individuals and families going through similar struggles, and let them know that they aren’t alone. We must challenge the way society down-plays the struggles involved in the recovery process. What better way to exceed society’s expectations of TBI survivors than by riding more than 3000 miles, over mountains, deserts, and farmland?

This website will be updated daily during my journey, and frequently beforehand. Currently in the planning stages, expect to see new information about the tour as time progresses.

Please consider donating a few dollars (or more!) towards the Raisin Hope Foundation and my journey. Without supporters and helpers, my first pedal-stroke might never happen. If you donate, you will receive a small gift, along with your name artfully written on my touring bike’s frame. See the button to the right of this page to make it happen!

    Doug,
U just met my friend Michele at the top of her driveway while training I am assuming. I just celebrated my 1 year anniversary 04/17/2010 of being hit while riding. I was training for The AIDS RIDE in CA. I am back in the saddle and training for this years ride. It’s funny how things happen. Earlier today I was talking to a collegue about possibly dropping out of the ride this year due to some significant life changes coming up for me. After reading your story I know I need to and WANT TO RIDE. Cycling has saved me in so many ways. Thanks for sharing ur story! Best of luck on your journey!

Having survived all that and willing to travel such a great distance is very brave and noble of you. Best of luck to you!
